No One is Happy With Medium…

…is a thing people who write on Medium write about on Medium

Well duh.

I’m not happy with a lot of things. I’m not going to list them but suffice to say the state of Medium isn’t in the top, oh, 100 things I’m not happy with. Don’t flatter yourself, Medium writer.

Have you looked outside recently?

Here is where I say a bad thing: not a lot of writing is good. Not just on Medium but everywhere else. Because we actually need gatekeepers. We need the infrastructure of journalism. Of writing. We need the copy editors and line editors and people who think, people who are paid to help the writers get the best out of their work. Imagine a world that suddenly decided it didn’t want to pay the mechanics anymore. We’re still driving but there’s no one to fix the cars. That’s what’s happened to writing. The economic model crumbled, I know, and for lots of reasons, some of them (many of them, let’s be honest) self-inflicted, and that’s one of the things I’m not entirely happy about. Among other things.

The state of Medium is, alas, not really one of them.
